‘The Founding Gifts’ exhibit celebrates art museum’s beginnings

The South Dakota Art Museum has opened 'The Founding Gifts,' a summerlong exhibition running from March 29 to September 21, celebrating the people and collections that established the museum. The exhibit highlights three key contributors: artist Harvey Dunn, whose 1950 donation of homesteading-era paintings formed the museum's foundational collection; the South Dakota General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which advocated for a permanent art museum and donated its art collection in 1970; and Congressman Benjamin Reifel, the first Lakota person elected to U.S. Congress, who loaned his Plains art collection in 1977, founding the museum's Native American collection. A free public reception is planned for August 8.

Nintendo Art Gallery to open in Kyoto this September

Nintendo is opening a dedicated Art Gallery on the second floor of its Nintendo Museum in Uji, Kyoto, on September 3, 2025. The gallery will display original character illustrations, concept drawings, and game art from iconic franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Splatoon, and Mario Kart, offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the artistic development of Nintendo's games. The museum, which opened in October 2024 at a former Nintendo factory, already features historical products, interactive exhibits, and Hanafuda card workshops, with access managed via a lottery system.

A new three-story glass gallery called Kodl Contemporary is set to open in Prague by the end of 2025. Located on Dvořákovo nábřeží near the Fairmont Golden Prague Hotel, the space was conceived by Jakub Kodl, the youngest member of the prominent Czech art collector family behind Galerie Kodl auction house. The glass cube design is intended to maximize natural light for displayed works, and the gallery aims to showcase contemporary Czech art to an international audience.
