Ready for their close-ups: celebrity passport photos

Dave Sharkey, a former professional boxer, and his wife Ann founded a photographic studio on Oxford Street in London in 1953, offering passport photos with a 10-minute turnaround. The studio, later run by their son Philip, became a popular spot for celebrities including Muhammad Ali, Mick and Bianca Jagger, David Hockney, and Tilda Swinton. A new book titled 'Passport Photo Service,' published by Phaidon Press, compiles over 300 of these celebrity passport portraits from the 1950s to the 2010s.

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) announced a lecture by linguist Dr. Salikoko S. Mufwene, exploring the evolution of language and symbols, alongside an exhibition of Gelsy Verna's artwork "Mother, Father, Please Help Me" (May 7–September 27, 2026). Verna, a Haitian-born Canadian artist and former University of Wisconsin–Madison professor, created the piece as a palimpsest over several years in collaboration with David Dunlap; the reverse side has been reproduced for display. MMoCA has added the work to its permanent collection.

Seabreeze artists shine in OMAM’s Tradewinds exhibit

More than 100 works of art by Seabreeze High School students are on display at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum (OMAM) in Ormond Beach, Florida, for the annual 'Tradewinds' juried exhibit, running through May 24. The show features 2D and 3D art, including ceramics, jewelry, and mosaics, and is judged by OMAM's Guest Curator Ruth Grim, who holds a Master of Arts from the New York University Institute of Fine Arts.
