Kiang Malingue, a prominent Hong Kong gallery, is opening a new commercial space in New York's Chinatown this week. The inaugural exhibition features Japanese artist Hiroka Yamashita, marking her New York solo debut. Founders Edouard Malingue and Lorraine Kiang cite a strategy to tap into a growing community of young Asian American collectors and rising market interest in Asian and Asian diaspora artists.
The expansion reflects a broader trend of Chinese galleries establishing a presence in New York, following moves by Alisan Fine Arts and Bank. Kiang Malingue aims to foster community among Asian diaspora collectors and deepen understanding of Asian art, which has gained institutional and scholarly attention in recent years. The gallery plans three to four exhibitions in its first year, connecting its Hong Kong and New York programs.
