An Art Lover’s Guide to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (and Its Expansion)

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, is preparing for the grand opening of a major expansion led by Safdie Architects. The project adds 114,000 square feet to the museum, bringing its total size to 314,000 square feet, with new galleries, studios, dining and event spaces, and educational centers. The expansion was prompted by record visitor numbers and growth in the collection, particularly in craft and Indigenous art. Executive director Rod Bigelow and curators discussed the museum's mission and how the new spaces will deepen engagement with American art and stories.

The expansion represents a significant moment for Crystal Bridges as it reassesses its role in a rapidly evolving museum landscape. The museum has prioritized free admission since its founding in 2011, supported by Walmart and its founders, and the expansion reinforces its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. By featuring artists' voices, embracing craft and Indigenous art as American art, and creating spaces that dissolve conventional barriers, Crystal Bridges aims to serve as a model for 21st-century museums in the heartland, uniting art, architecture, and nature to inspire diverse audiences.
