Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, will open a major expansion designed by Safdie Architects on June 6–7, 2025. The 114,000-square-foot addition includes new galleries, a temporary exhibition hall with a custom skylight, a contemporary American art gallery featuring works by Yayoi Kusama and Teresita Fernández, a bridge with display areas and a cafe, and a creative learning hub with studios and artist residency spaces. The expansion completes a figure-eight plan spanning two ponds, using materials like southern yellow pine and copper cladding that reflect the Ozark landscape.
The expansion matters because it deepens Crystal Bridges’ mission to broaden access to American art and arts education, adding dedicated spaces for rotating exhibitions, digital and ceramics studios, and community gathering areas. Architect Moshe Safdie described the project as the culmination of a two-decade collaboration that extends the museum’s connection to nature and embeds new community and learning spaces within a regional architectural language. The opening marks a significant milestone for the institution and for contemporary museum design in the United States.
