Galleria Dallas is hosting an art exhibit titled "Freedom" featuring the work of Dallas-based painter Devon Deshaun in honor of Juneteenth. The exhibit, on display until July 27, includes pieces such as "Lovebirds" and "Sunflower" that celebrate cultural pride. Deshaun, a self-taught artist from Waco, developed a unique style called Pebbled Melanin, a variation of stippling. The shopping center also commissioned a T-shirt design from Deshaun, which will be distributed free on June 13, with the artist present for a meet and greet.
This collaboration matters because it highlights how commercial spaces like shopping malls can engage local communities by celebrating cultural heritage and supporting emerging artists. By centering Juneteenth—a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S.—the exhibit uses art to foster dialogue about freedom, identity, and resilience. It also provides visibility for a self-taught artist with a distinctive technique, reinforcing the role of public-private partnerships in making art accessible beyond traditional gallery settings.
