Young Fijian artist Hefrani Barnes has launched her first solo exhibition, titled "Emergent," at the University of Fiji's Suva Central Campus. The show features over 20 artworks addressing climate change, identity, health issues, and social challenges affecting Pacific communities, and was attended by students, artists, and invited guests. Guest speaker Letila Mitchell highlighted the role of artists in preserving knowledge and culture, while Barnes's mother spoke on her behalf about the artist's personal journey living with epilepsy and her use of diverse cultural materials.
This exhibition matters because it marks a significant milestone for an emerging Pacific artist whose work tackles urgent regional and global issues through a deeply personal lens. It also underscores the University of Fiji's ambition to establish its Suva Central Campus as a leading contemporary Pacific arts and cultural space, providing vital opportunities for young artists in the region to gain visibility and foster community dialogue.
