In Pictures: highlights from Art Basel’s Unlimited section, focused on monumental projects

Art Basel's Unlimited section, curated by Ruba Katrib, presents 59 large-scale works spanning nearly 100 years. Highlights include Chris Burden's 'L.A.P.D. Uniforms' (1993), a response to the Rodney King beating; Thomas Ruff's manipulated 9/11 images; Niki de Saint Phalle's HIV/AIDS-themed obelisks; Alfredo Jaar's installation on language and crisis; Peter Hujar's final photographic series; and Eduardo Arroyo's reimagining of Rembrandt referencing Franco's death. The section emphasizes thematic connections across the floorplan.

This year's Unlimited demonstrates how monumental projects can address enduring social and political issues—from police violence and terrorism to dictatorship and public health crises. By juxtaposing historical and contemporary works, the section highlights the evolving nature of monumentality and the power of art to engage with urgent global conversations, reinforcing Art Basel's role as a platform for ambitious, thought-provoking installations.
