National Art Museum explores Baku's historical image through art [PHOTOS]

The Azerbaijan National Art Museum hosted a public presentation of Danish-German artist Olaf Viggo Langner's 1911 work "Shirvanshahs' Palace. Minaret," which was acquired in 2024 by the Azerbaijan Culture Ministry from the Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen. The event also featured a lecture by art scholar Sevil Karimova titled "Baku in the Creative Legacy of Viggo Langner," and included speeches by Deputy Culture Minister Saadat Yusifova, museum director Shirin Malikova, and art historian Telman Ibrahimov. The artwork is part of the ongoing exhibition "Chronicle of the City of Winds: Baku in the Works of 19th–21st Century Artists."

The event matters because it highlights the repatriation and scholarly reattribution of a historically significant artwork, enriching Azerbaijan's national cultural heritage and museum collections. It also underscores the role of foreign artists' depictions of Baku as valuable resources for studying the country's historical and architectural legacy, while fostering cultural exchange and academic research in Azerbaijani art history.
