In Alessandria, the recovery of the medieval church of San Francesco will bring a new museum to the city

Ad Alessandria il recupero della chiesa medievale di San Francesco porterà un nuovo museo in città

The medieval Church of San Francesco in Alessandria, Italy, has undergone a complex recovery and restoration project over the past 25 years, culminating in its reopening to the public for weekends in June 2026. The church, founded in the late 13th century and once a major Franciscan center in northern Italy, had been radically altered in the 19th century when it was converted into a cavalry barracks and later a military hospital. The architectural restoration, which began in 2022, has restored the building's Gothic features, including its brick exterior, bell tower, polychrome vault paintings, and 14th-century fresco traces. The long-term plan is to transform the entire complex into a Museo della città (City Museum), creating a new cultural hub for Alessandria.

This project matters because it reclaims a historically significant religious and architectural landmark that had been inaccessible for nearly two centuries, restoring it as a public cultural asset. The conversion into a city museum will provide a permanent cultural destination for residents and visitors, strengthening Alessandria's cultural identity and tourism appeal. The restoration also highlights the importance of heritage preservation in smaller Italian cities, demonstrating how strategic urban development funding (POR FESR 2014-2020) can revive neglected historic structures and integrate them into contemporary civic life.
